How to write a shopping list (to save money)
Hi everyone!
I'm going round the shops tomorrow so I decided to write a shopping list to make sure I only buy the things I need.
While writing the list I thought I would share with you some of my tips about writing a list to save money.
1. Write a list of all the things you would like.
eg. here's mine...
Pink blazer
Pyjamas
Slippers
Flower garland hairband
School bag
Stack of plain rings
Coat
Collar necklace
Stationery
Scarf
2. Sort the items into 2 categories (wants and needs)
eg.
Wants Needs
Pink blazer Pyjamas
Flower garland hairband Slippers
Stack of plain rings School bag
Collar necklace Coat
Scarf Stationery
3. Once you've done this, you'll have a clear picture of the things you actually need to buy first. This way, you won't be as tempted to indulge in those luxuries and therefore you will save money!
You can keep your wants list for those times when you have a little extra money and deserve a treat!
.................................................................................................................
I hope this was helpful to you and will encourage you to make a list to help save you a little bit more. It's good to get into the habit of writing lists before you go shopping, I know it always makes me feel more organized.
P.S. I do have pyjamas and slippers, I just need new ones! I won't be buying these from thrift stores as these are items I think you shouldn't and probably don't want to get second-hand. I need a school bag and stationery for going back to school. I'll look around thrift stores for a bag but I would be more likely to get it new because I want it to last as long as possible (therefore not worn out). My stationery will most likely be coming from Poundland! Read my post about buying stationery from pound shops here. I debated with myself whether to put a new coat on the needs list or not. I'm looking for a stylish one because I already have an ordinary pink waterproof one but it isn't all too pretty. I chose to put it on the needs list because I'll probably get it in a neutral colour so it goes with more outfits - my pink coat (sadly) doesn't go with everything.
Anyway, here's some extra tips:
- Look online for inspiration pictures - I find this sometimes helps.
- On your list, write beside each item, the most amount of money you would be willing to spend on this item.
- Keep a notebook for shopping lists. I do, it's another way of organising things and it can be interesting to look back on what you wanted a month ago, 3 months ago, last year. If a notebook would bother you, you could always make a handy reminder on your phone!
- Look in your wardrobe or closet, and check your list. If anything is similar, think extra hard if you really need another one of this item.
- Of course you can apply these methods to other types of purchases; food, homeware etc.
