How to: | deal with chapped lips!

Hello everyone!

Ah, Autumn and Winter. Undoubtedly my two favourite seasons.
I love the cold weather, the fashion, the festive atmosphere and how it's semi-acceptable to drink hot chocolate like it's water.

What I don't love is the inevitability of chapped lips.
With the changing of seasons, the air gets colder and drier causing skin to dry out and look dull. A lot of us have dry skin as it is, myself included, so it's important to keep up with a good skincare routine which I posted about here.
This post, however will be all about how you can deal with those pesky chapped lips!

1. WATER

I'm a firm believer that prevention is key to most ailments, and one way to can prevent dry skin is to drink water and plenty of it.

2 litres is the recommended daily amount and I'll put my hands up, I definitely don't achieve this everyday! It's something I'm going to try and do now though because the benefits are so worth it. It's not easy, but I think the key is adding it into your routine gradually. Carrying a bottle in your bag will give you that little reminder throughout the day!

2. AVOID PICKING/LICKING

It's tempting, isn't it?

Picking increases the risk of infection which could make the problem worse, and licking only dries out your lips further! Try to avoid both of these habits and if you follow tips 3 and 4, you'll be far less likely to want to itch.

3. EXFOLIATE

To help start the healing process, you're gonna wanna get rid of that dead skin by exfoliating your lips.

I've been using LUSH's bubblegum lip scrub for years now, and I swear by it. It tastes and smells amazing while also doing your lips a whole lotta good. I think they're about a fiver each which initially sounds a bit steep for such a tiny pot, but believe me when I say they last for ages! If you want to spend less, you could always get creative and make your own lip scrub from sugar and honey or use the toothbrush method! Make sure the toothbrush is clean and you'll be thrilled with the results.

4. MOISTURISE

So now your lips are exfoliated, they're all ready for a nourishing balm to soften them up and keep them that way!

A lot of lip balms on the market can actually do the opposite, forcing you to apply them over and over so it's best to stick to something natural to lock in moisture. I personally love coconut oil as it has a nice scent and can be used all over the body, as well as on your hair! Plus, it really does sink into the lips rather than just sit there on top.

Balms do come in handy for protection once you've locked the moisture in, and up there in my all time favourites are the Carmex tubes. This balm has drastically improved my dry lips in the space of two days since repurchasing. They add a pretty sheen while still feeling like they're getting to work. I know some people don't like the 'tingly-ness' so a nice alternative are the Nivea balms as they come in a wide variety of scents and feel very nourishing.
